Good music and good lyrics make a powerful combination. Here's just a small selection of lyrics that I can identify with, both in my own life and in others. Some of these words are rather dark, but I've come to understand that every shadow within us is a doorway to a hidden light, we just need to have the courage and the strength to face it instead of  ignoring or suppressing it. This can be a tremendous challenge, but the rewards make it an extremely worthwhile and empowering process.

Well it's got nothing to do with anything that is real
You just believe in it and it's true
You can sooth like an angel or sigh like a saint
You can dream it and see it through
You will live to see a sea of lights
Sparking on the face of a pearl
Climb your own peak
Find a new streak
Get yourself along to the world party

Now you've been building for yourself a cool place in the sand
You're thinking that it's mighty fine
You've got dust in your eyeballs, you got mud in your mouth
But it's your head, it ain't mine
I've got a madman of my own to contend with
Cursing in the cave of my skull
Turn the other cheek
Find a new streak
Get yourself along to the world party

Well I heard a rumour of a golden age
Somewhere back along the line
Maybe I dreamed it in a whisper or heard it in a spell
It was something to do with the sign of the times
And the only thing that I remember
Is a summer like a pretty girl
Who shimmers and shines
Moving in time
Shaking to the beat of the heart of the world party
- The Waterboys (World Party)

In high places
Shining through
In all things
In everything we do
There's a reason
There's a place to come to
And when I find this peace
I'm trusting in you
Trusting in you

Yeah, I lay my life down
I lift you up

I let you go
And I give you up
I lay my life down
I lift you up
I let you go
And I give you all

In high places
Shining through
In all things
In everything we do
In high places
Shining though
In all things
In all things

When the battle comes
When the rain is pouring down
When darkness shadows the sun
What have we done?
Where do we go from here?

And over barriers we cross
Reaching for something lost
And from this we rise
To higher places
As in all things
We must go on
- Leahy (High Places)

Now the mist across the window hides the lines

But nothing hides the colour of the lights that shine
Electricity so fine
Look and dry your eyes

We are young but getting old before our time
We'll leave the TV and the radio behind
Don't you wonder why we're blind
Steppin' out tonight
- Joe Jackson (Steppin' Out)

May you never lay your head down without a hand to hold
May you never make your bed out in the cold
May you never lose your temper if you get hit in a bar room fight
May you never lose your woman over night
- John Martyn (May You Never)

Sometimes I see your face
The stars seem to lose their place
Why must I think of you?
Why must I?
Why should I?
Why should I cry for you?
Why would you want me to?
What would it mean to say
I loved you in my fashion?
- Sting (Why Should I Cry For You)

Our conscious lives run deep
You cling onto your mountain while we sleep
This way of life is part of me
The is no price so only let me be
And should the children weep
The turning world will sing their souls to sleep
When you have sunk without a trace
The universe will suck me into place
- Sting (We Work The Black Seam Together)

I'm scared of swimming in the sea
Dark shapes moving under me
Every fear I swallow makes me small
Inconsequential things occur
Alarms are triggered, memories stir

...It's not the way it has to be
...

I'm afraid of what I do not know
I hate being undermined
I'm afraid I can be devil man
And I'm scared to be divine
Don't mess with me my fuse is short
Beneath this skin these fragments caught

...When i allow it to be
...
It has no control over me
I have my fears
But they do not have me

Walking through the undergrowth to the house in the woods

The deeper I go the darker it gets
I peer through the window
Knock at the door
And the monster I was so afraid of lies curled up on the floor
He's curled up on the floor just like a baby boy
I cry until I laugh
- Peter Gabriel (Darkness)

Much more than this way beyond imagination
Much more than this beyond the stars
With my head so full so full of fractured pictures
And i'm all there right next to you
So much more than this there is something else there
When all that you had has all gone
More than this i'm alone feeling so connected
And i'm all there right next to you
More than this
- Peter Gabriel (More Than This)

Sometimes you're stormy water on which I pour my oil
In each other's shadow the roots reach into the soil
All these knots so tightly tied we could not uncoil
In lovetown
No place to settle down
And do those teeth still match the wound
Take a good look around
In lovetown
- Peter Gabriel (Lovetown)

I cry the way that babies cry
The way they can't deny
The way it feels
Words, they climb all over you
'Til they uncover you
From where you hide
And in this moment, I need to be needed
When my self-esteem is sinking, I like to be liked
In this emptiness and fear,
I want to be wanted
'Cause I love to be loved
I love to be loved
- Peter Gabriel (Love To Be Loved)

Man I'm losing sound and sight of all those who can tell me wrong from right
When all things beautiful and bright sink in the night
Yet there's still something in my heart that can find a way
To make a start
To turn up the signal
Wipe out the noise
- Peter Gabriel (Signal To Noise)

Life carries on in the people I meet
In everyone that’s out on the street
In all the dogs and cats
In the flies and rats
In the rot and the rust
In the ashes and the dust
Life carries on and on and on and on
Life carries on and on and on
It’s just the car that we ride in
A home we reside in
The face that we hide in
The way we are tied in
And life carries on and on and on and on
Life carries on and on and on
- Peter Gabriel (I Grieve)

Another time it might have been so different
Oh if only we could do it all again
But now it's just another fading memory
Out of focus, though the outline still remains

So far away, away, fading distant lights
Leaving us all behind, lost in a changing world
And you know that these are the days of our lives
So remember

Like the story that we wish was never ending
We know sometime we must reach the final page
Still we carry on just pretending
That there'll always be one more day to go

So far away, away, fading distant lights
Leaving us all behind, lost in a changing world
And you know that these are the days of our lives
So remember
- Genesis (Fading Lights)

Got me writing lyrics on postcards
Then in the evenings looking at stars
But the brightest of the planets is Mars
What has happened to love?
(Rufus Wainwright - Go Or Go Ahead)

Cause I know that feeling when you've tried so hard to make your way out
Nothing mends
So you search for the breed of the problems there lying deep down in the soul
Even if they never end
There's a whole bunch of reasons trying to get out
But they can't make it out of the door
Ohh, I know the reason I'm not enough
There's nothing more

But
if I chant for happiness maybe that will make me feel better
I can't change my ideals, I can't put out the fire
Oh if I chant for happiness maybe that will bring us together for the better
I can't changes my ideals, I can't lose my desire
(Seal - Newborn friend)

I'm a man with a clear destination

I'm a man with a broad imagination
You fog the mind, you stir the soul
I can't find no control...

Wait...
Did you hear that?

Man this is sure stirring up some ghosts for me
She said "The one thing you've got to learn is not to be afraid of it."
I said "No, I like it. I like it, it's good."
She said "You like it now but you'll learn to love it later."
- Robbie Robertson (Somewhere Down The Crazy River)
